    The craft of empirical research.

Scales measure, conversations explain. This collection bundles method, governance and analysis craft — for teams that need decision-grade evidence and have to defend it internally.

    Topic overview

    The craft

Scales are good at measuring a what. They are poor at explaining a why. Board decisions rarely stand on the what alone — the question is always what to act on.

Qualitative interviews deliver the why. They have not been scalable — until now. AI-guided conversations close that gap: not as a replacement for the scale, but as its extension: several hundred interviews with consistent guide quality in weeks instead of months.

Governance is not a footnote. EU AI Act, GDPR, works council, auditor: at enterprise scale you need a non-retention architecture, clear role models and documented procedures — otherwise nothing ships.

    In short
    • 01Scales measure, conversations explain.
    • 02Representativeness is not the same as truth — heterogeneity is a feature.
    • 03Non-retention is governance design, not marketing.
    • 04Cronbach, median and top-2-box belong to scales — conversations follow coding and clustering.
    • 05AI tools are instruments, not outcomes — the method decides.
    Example finding
    Situation

Group legal requires a governance review before rolling out a listening programme. Questions: is processing EU AI Act compliant? What happens to audio? What is the works council path?

    Approach

Five-week review along non-retention architecture, record of processing activities, data processing agreement, technical and organisational measures and a documented rights concept for HR and the works council.

    Result

Auditor sign-off: audio is not stored, transcripts are pseudonymised, roles and purposes are documented. Legal and compliance end up with a defensible governance file.

    Consequence

Rollout starts in week 6 with works council sign-off. The review document becomes the template for every subsequent programme in the group.
